Austria

We left Schliersee on Saturday 28th July and headed off along the back roads towards Austria. It is a lovely part of Germany to travel through with many picturesque hotels and towns and a fair amount of biker's rest stops, but it made a nice change to get onto the main E45 going south to Austria and onto our stop at Kaprun.

A quick shot taken from the motorhome. There were a few people canoeing down this river and sunbathing under the trees.

Our campsite at Kaprun, we probably wouldn't go back to this one.

There was a huge thunder and lightning storm that night.

We watched the cycling part of a Triathlon taking part in the town. Rather them than me, they had to climb the mountain behind 3 times before they went off to the next challenge. We set off to climb the Grossglockner pass and this was the weather at the start,

Some more photos of the ascent.

The weather begins to break. The summit at 2407mts. Boy was that a climb.

View of the glacier at Franz Josephs-Hohe Looking back down

Taking a break. The cloud came in for a bit but unbelievable views.

Looking down to where we were going. We had to stop a few times on the descent as the brakes were beginning to get very hot. I had to change down to 1st gear on some of the steepest bits to slow us down.

The church at Heiligenblut where there was a campsite nestling in the valley just beneath the village. A very pretty place.

It looked worth a revisit and time spent walking around it.

We stopped for the evening at a small campsite in Greifenburg where the lady in charge put us right next to a Dutch couple in a caravan with an awning and we were utilising their parking space needless to say, on their return from a day out, they were not too amused but after a chat with them international relations were resumed.

We met a lot of Dutch people during the trip and never came across a bad mannered or surly group at all. Generally they were really pleasant and helpful.

We decided to eat in the restaurant that evening and it was very tasty.

We left the following morning for Slovenia as the Triglav National Park was beckoning.
